- Swap those pennies for beachware!
Planning a road trip for the Whitsun holidays? Save some cash for cocktails at the beach by filling up smart. Here's a rundown of the most wallet-friendly stops along popular routes, based on data from the EU Commission. Some destinations may surprise you!
Journeying South
- Austria or Bust?!
Austria offers cheaper fuel than Germany; gasoline is 22 cents cheaper, while diesel saves 6 cents. If Austria is just a pit stop, consider the destination: Fuel is pricier in Italy, but cheaper in Slovenia, Croatia, or Hungary. So, a couple extra miles or a half-tank fill-up in Austria might be worth it! The savings to Slovakia are minor, but diesel is cheaper there than in Austria — still significantly cheaper than in Germany.
Switzerland, unfortunately, isn't budget-friendly for fueling up. Prices are higher than in Germany, Italy, or France. If you're headed to Italy, refuel your diesel tank beforehand, as it's a bit pricier in the destination country, too.
Westbound Wanderlust
- Bonjour, Bon Prix!
France is almost as cheap as Germany when it comes to fuel. Travelers headed to Spain can save big on gas in the destination country. Belgium, however, offers lower gasoline prices – 16 cents less – but has slightly higher diesel costs than Germany. The Netherlands comes with 17 cent higher gasoline prices and 7 cent pricier diesel. Lucky for you, Luxembourg is the cheapest western option, with potential savings of 24 cents on gas and 16 cents on diesel!
Eastward Evolutions
- The Czech's Cheap Cheap!
The Czech Republic is the cheapest neighboring country for fuel. You can save 35 cents per liter of gasoline and 22 cents on diesel! Not even Hungary or Slovakia can beat that.
Northern Navigations
- Poland's Poles Apart!
Travelers heading northeast to Poland can fill up ultra-cheaply; super gasoline costs 35 cents less, while diesel saves 18 cents cents. However, those headed to Denmark should refuel beforehand: Super gasoline runs 23 cents more expensive there than in Germany, and diesel costs 14 cents more.
The price disparities are usually due to different taxes and fees. Oil price fluctuations generally affect all countries, but the differences — based on figures from May 26, with newer data not yet available — are relatively stable.
Just be aware that prices can vary slightly according to the gas station, time of day, region, and whether you're on a highway or country road. Differences are often lower right before or after the border.
Is it worth tweaking your travel route for cheaper fuel and enduring detours? Probably not, considering the time and environmental impact. Even if you calculate relatively low costs of 30 cents per mile driven, the savings quickly vanish.
If you'd rather not fill up abroad, do so in the evening before departure. Fuel is usually a few cents cheaper then than in the morning.
