Airline IndiGo Refutes Passenger's Allegations of Airport Overpricing: "No Irregularities Detected"
In a recent incident, Rattan Dhillon, a passenger, has raised concerns about the inconsistent baggage weighing scales at IndiGo's check-in counters. During his journey from Goa to Chandigarh on flight 6E724, his bag showed varying weights—18 kg, 16 kg, and 15 kg—on different scales.
Despite pointing out the discrepancy, IndiGo staff dismissed his concerns, stating that the 15 kg reading was incorrect and the 18 kg weight was accurate. Dhillon claimed that he was forced to pay ₹11,900 for excess baggage, despite his bag possibly being within the limit.
Dhillon has provided evidence to support his claims. He pre-weighed his bag, which he says was under the permissible limit of 15 kg. His bag showed different weights on different scales, with readings of 15 kg, 16 kg, and 18 kg.
IndiGo has denied any discrepancies in their baggage weighing equipment, stating that all scales are regularly calibrated and certified by airport authorities. The airline explained that the total checked-in baggage for Dhillon and his co-travellers exceeded the permissible limit, thus incurring excess baggage charges.
However, the incident has sparked discussions about the need for consistent and accurate baggage weighing practices in airports. Goa International Airport has confirmed that annual certification of weighing machines at check-in counters is carried out by the Office of the Controller, Legal Metrology, Government of Goa.
As of now, there is no clear resolution to Dhillon's specific claim. IndiGo has assured that all baggage weighing scales are maintained, routinely calibrated, and certified by airport authorities to ensure accurate readings. However, attempts to respond to Dhillon's allegations were unsuccessful, as the contact number provided by Dhillon was unreachable.
Dhillon's allegations were made in a viral post on an unspecified platform, where he described the alleged inconsistent weighing scales as "daylight robbery". He claims that the scales inflate the weight by 2-3 kg, as verified by weighing his bag at his hotel.
This incident serves as a reminder for the importance of accurate baggage weighing practices in the aviation industry, ensuring fairness and transparency for passengers.
- Rattan Dhillon's travel experience highlights the importance of maintaining consistent lifestyle with regard to weighing bags, as inconsistent readings can lead to unnecessary charges.
- The controversy surrounding IndiGo's baggage weighing scales has fueled discussions about the necessity of accurate weighing practices in travel, aiming to prevent disputes and ensure a fair experience for all passengers.
