Australia Urged to Join Horizon Europe for Billion-Dollar Research Funds

Horizon Europe, the European Union's research and innovation funding programme, presents a substantial opportunity for global collaboration. While the Australian government's stance on joining this initiative remains unclear, Universities Australia Chief Executive Luke Sheehy has emphasised its potential benefits, including sparking innovation, strengthening partnerships, and driving economic growth.

Sheehy has met with European Commission representatives and the Australian Embassy to discuss Australia's potential membership. He views the resumption of Australia-EU trade talks as an ideal chance to prioritise Horizon Europe access. Association with the programme would grant Australian researchers access to a multi-billion-dollar fund and enhance international cooperation, removing a significant barrier for collaboration with European and global counterparts.

Joining Horizon Europe requires a modest investment, with potential benefits including access to billions in funding. Sheehy warns that rising geopolitical tensions pose a risk to existing research alliances, urging the federal government to act to maintain Australia's competitive edge. Countries like Canada and New Zealand are already associated with Horizon Europe, while Australia is not.

Universities Australia has called on the federal government to join Horizon Europe to strengthen Australia's economic resilience and global competitiveness. Despite the Australian government's current position being unclear, the potential benefits, including access to billions in funding and enhanced international cooperation, make a strong case for Australia's involvement in this global research and innovation initiative.
