Bitters-Old makes a comeback in modern times
Hey there! I just got back from Hershey, PA, aka the "Sweetest Place on Earth," and let me tell ya, it did not disappoint! Even though Willy Wonka might beg to differ.
I've been to Hershey before, but this time was special – I got to stay overnight at the famous Hershey Hotel and the Woodside Cottages. And let me tell you, the place was truly magical, especially with the light snow falling. The service was top-notch, surpassing even the best four-star hotels I've ever visited, from the attentive concierge to the exceptional waitstaff at one of the on-site restaurants, trevi 5.
Unfortunately, my trip took a slight turn for the worse when I came down with a stomach bug around dinner time. I wasn't sure if I was really sick or if it was just my imagination (a girl can dream). But our waitress seemed to have a hunch – maybe she noticed my untouched Caesar salad and ginger ale or my pale face.
She quickly boxed up my meal and offered me crackers and more ginger ale to take back to my room. Then, before I left, she asked, "Would you like some bitters to help settle your stomach?"
Kitchen witchery, right? I'd heard of bitters in books, but I wasn't really sure what they were or what they did. That night, I declined, but I'm kicking myself now.
After some research, it turns out that bitters are great for helping with indigestion and tummy troubles, not just stomach flu. According to Wiki: bitters are a mixture of water, alcohol, and various herbs and botanicals, made popular by Angostura and used in cocktails as well as for digestive issues.
So, bitters are making a comeback as a natural remedy for stomach troubles (and for cocktails too!), just like so many other classic things that have recently been revived.
What's your go-to remedy for an upset stomach? And if it's bitters, let me know – I might just have to give them a try next time!
