Rocking 150 Years: mpk's Anniversary Bash Ignites with Thought-Provoking Art

Hey there! The Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern (mpk) is kickin' off a massive celebration in honor of its 150th anniversary, and it's gonna be a wild ride! Directer Steffen Egle's excited to spill the beans about the festivities in good ol' Kaiserslautern. "We've shaken things up to make art more engaging and interactive," he said.

Three thematic tours called "What's the Deal with Art?", "The Human Factor in Art", and "Art for All Senses" will offer a fresh perspective. The museum says goodbye to the traditional hangout spots where art gets showcased based on periods, and hello to more exciting, unconventional clustering.

Party Time!

The opening weekend, on May 10th and 11th, will rock with a pre-party and a family day. Guess what? The new setup includes art pieces long kept hidden and opportunities for the public to get involved!

A special exhibit, "Time Warp - Bought. Swapped. Nabbed?", peers into mpk's history during the Nazi era and the museum's ongoing efforts in provenance research. "I believed it was crucial for us to delve into our house’s history during the NS era during the anniversary year," Egle explained.

Renovations will breathe new life into the museum's '50s architecture, unmasking a mural by Edvard Frank (1909-1972) for the first time since the '80s! Continuous growth comes from donors such as the Lenhardt Foundation and the Utermann Gallery, and mpk plans a donor wall to celebrate this civic spirit.

Online Treasures and Long Game

The future will beckon with a shiny new online platform, making artworks more accessible digitally. Major projects such as an outdoor depot in the old state central bank and reviving the Aula exemplify the museum's forward-thinking approach, all under the trusteeship of the District Association Pfalz. Sculptures by Franz Bernhard (1934-2013) and Maximilian Hutlett (1933-2018) add a touch of class to the anniverary, and guess what? All events are FREE!

Curious about the history of the Palatine Industrial Museum Association? It started back in December 1874, with plans for the museum initiated the following year.
