Over the recent weekend, Yekaterinburg celebrated a significant milestone – the 20th anniversary since the launch of the "Academic" project, which served as the foundation for the creation of the eighth administrative district of the city. Today, Academic is more than just residential quarters on the southwest of Ural's capital, but a complete urban district with its own infrastructure, unique social environment, and ambitious plans for the future.

Yekaterinburg's Academic District: A Celebrated Milestone

After two decades of relentless, large-scale development - from initial construction projects to the establishment of a modern district recognized as a standalone administrative unit in 2021 - Yekaterinburg's Academic District has come a long way. Over this period, numerous residential buildings, schools, daycare centers, hospitals, tramways, cultural and sports facilities, and engineering infrastructure have been built here.

The Mayor's Remarks

Yekaterinburg's mayor, Aleksei Orlov, shared his thoughts on the remarkable jubilee celebrations:

The jubilee festivities were grand and bursting with energy. From midday, the Preobrazhensky Park filled with music, workshops, competitions, and performances. The event united residents of all ages, from toddlers to senior citizens, fostering genuine unity within the district.

One of the event's main highlights was the traditional Academic Parade of the Koliada and the "Double Joy" twin and multiple births festival, which has become a cherished local tradition. Visitors had access to themed zones featuring exhibitions, multimedia stands, interactive quizzes, and photo zones. Kids could color giant murals, assemble puzzles, make greeting cards for their loved ones, and teenagers and adults got to participate in the "5 Keys to Academia" escape room and experiment with stop-motion technology.

Those seeking active pursuits could join yoga, Zumba, Latin, and hip-hop masterclasses, while little ones had a play area filled with sand and a bubbly soap bubbles show. Fans of drum circles enjoyed noisy, rhythmic workshops, which attracted various generations of district residents.

Throughout the day, the stage showcased children's ensembles, interactive games, giveaways, flash mobs, and songs dedicated to the district. The evening culminated with Maxim's performance, drawing residents from all over Yekaterinburg and neighboring towns.

The Academic District's jubilee wasn't just a reason for a celebration but a chance to reflect on the accomplishments achieved over 20 years and remind everyone that this district is more than just a city’s part; it's a model example of comprehensive urban development, where living quality, education, and a vision for the future coalesce.

The "Academic" Land Development Project, undertaken since 2007, is the largest of its kind in Europe. In 2021, the Academic District became the eighth municipal district of Yekaterinburg. So far, approximately 2.3 million square meters of residential and commercial real estate, along with social and sports infrastructure, including 15 daycare centers, 6 schools, 13 km of walkways, 50 hectares of park land (Preobrazhensky Park), 20 km of bicycle lanes, a rapid transport station and emergency medical center, clinics for adults and children, music and arts schools, 70 football fields, a judo hall, and a tennis academy, have been constructed in the area.

Yekaterinburg, known for its heavy engineering and chemical industries, presents a strong case for future academic and educational initiatives, with the potential to expand educational facilities, promote research collaborations, and cultivate enriching cultural programs.

  1. The jubilee celebrations in Yekaterinburg's Academic District not only provided an opportunity for entertainment but also served as a platform to reflect upon the accomplishments of the past 20 years.
  2. As part of the jubilee festivities, residents and visitors were invited to participate in workshops, competitions, and interactive activities centered around music, dance, arts, and technology.
  3. In the spirit of community unity, the event actively catered to various interests, including fashion and beauty demonstrations, food and drink tastings, and even pet-oriented activities.
  4. For those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere, the day offered leisurely activities such as yoga, Zumba, and drum circle workshops, as well as exploring themed zones featuring exhibitions and multimedia stands.
  5. Travelers and local residents alike were excited to witness the grand finale of the celebrations, a performance by popular artist Maxim, attracting a large audience from Yekaterinburg and its surrounding towns.
