Customs Advice for Stress-Free Homecoming Journey
As the summer holidays approach in Hamburg, the Hamburg Customs Office is reminding vacationers to familiarize themselves with travel regulations to avoid surprises at customs upon return.
Recent incidents have highlighted the importance of knowing duty-free allowances, with 26 violations detected in three cruise ship arrivals over the past two days. Ignorance of customs regulations does not exempt one from punishment, even when traveling.
For air or sea travelers, the total goods value allowed is up to 430 euros. However, for travelers under 15 years old, the total goods value allowed is reduced to 175 euros.
For non-EU travel, duty-free import limits for alcoholic beverages for individuals aged 17 and above are: 1 liter of spirits with an alcohol content of more than 22%, 2 liters of alcohol and alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content of 22% or less, 4 liters of sparkling wine, and 16 liters of beer, or a proportional combination. Similarly, for tobacco products, the limits are: 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars, 250 grams of smoking tobacco, or a proportional combination.
The trade of protected animals and plants, or products derived from them, is strictly regulated. Violations can result in confiscation of goods and high fines. To avoid purchasing such items, travelers can refer to the website www.artenschutz-online.de.
An online brochure titled "Travel Time - Your Way Through Customs" is available to help travelers navigate customs regulations. The brochure includes information on permitted souvenirs, import limits for certain goods from non-EU countries, and goods to avoid.
