Cycling Journey: Day 1 - Wrocław to Kołobrzeg by Bike

Pedaling Through Poland: Day 1 - Wrocław to Leszno

On the 15th of May, our crack team of nine cyclists embarked on an epic 6-day journey from Wrocław, aiming for the coast at Kołobrzeg. Covering around 675 km, we navigated quiet asphalt roads, forests, and fields, taking in a sprinkle of lakes, landscapes, and national parks. We were fortunate to dodge rain, sandstorms, and bike malfunctions during our adventure, with nature's breathtaking vistas being our reward for the journey's hardships.

Our day began with a plan to conquer the Trzebnica Hills and the Barycz Valley. To kick things off, we followed the Krzyżanowice - Żmigród bicycle trail, green if I recall correctly. Initially, the trail runs along an asphalt road that turned into a cozy gravel path after about 10 km in the Malin Forest. With the bad luck of a punctured inner tube sooner than expected, we stopped there to make a quick repair. As more bicycle faults turned out to be part of our everyday life, the mishap felt less unlucky and more ordinary.

After the Malin Forest, we climbed some rolling hills in the Trzebnica region and coasted down picturesque gorges. Between Trzebnica and Księginice, we made a considerable detour to the Cztery Ściany brewery, rumored to serve outstanding beer. Though I'm not a fan of all brews, I had to chill for a while in such a "beautiful" place.

Leaving the brewery, we pedaled along the bike path to Ujeździec Wielki and soon found ourselves in the Barycz Valley Landscape Park. Initially, we had to power through some mud and sand, but after about 4 km, a wonderful bike path unfurled before us.

Cruising along the path, we were soon treated to a tranquil, empty asphalt road. After 5 km, we reached Jamnik, where we took a well-deserved break—a very beautiful spot indeed. The rain was threatening to wet our clothes, but 10 km down the line in Olsza, it rained heavily.

Seeking shelter, we took refuge under the kindness of a farm lady's garden shelter, enjoying a cozy half-hour interlude before setting off again. The rain soon let up, but instead of smooth sailing, we had another stop, this time for a tire change. The issue seemed dire, but luck was on our side, as there were some cyclists who came equipped with spare tires—something I wouldn't have thought of myself.

So, we continued along the R9 bike trail towards Dubin. After this, we rode along the asphalt road to Jutrosin, where we stopped for lunch at the U Szwagra restaurant. With less than 30 km on a not-so-busy asphalt road left, we were nearing our destination.

On a purchasing spree in Biedronka in Krobia, we stocked up for the rest of the journey before finally reaching our accommodations in Wymysłowo after 11 hours and 116 km, ready to embark on Day 2 and the National Park of Wielkopolska. Stay tuned!
