Hometown Hero: Kazakh Dancer Meirambek Nazargozhayev Graces the Stages of Europe's Elite

Get ready, Almaty! On June 27, you'll witness a stellar performance by none other than homegrown talent, Meirambek Nazargozhayev, currently gracing the stages of the illustrious Royal Danish Theater.

The small Kazakh village of Karaoi, just 50 kilometers from Almaty, has produced a world-class ballet dancer, thanks to the sheer talent and determination of its native son.

Steeped in music and creativity from an early age, Nazargozhayev had no ballet in his routine, spending his days singing and playing the dombra instead. His life took a turn when his aunt, a teacher at the prestigious Almaty Choreographic School, recognized his dormant potential and encouraged his parents to enroll him.

Initially, Nazargozhayev's academic exam scores showed promise, but his ballet marks were average due to limited flexibility and turnout. However, the teachers believed in his potential and he was accepted into the Almaty Choreographic College named after Alexander Seleznev. Over eight grueling years, he honed his craft, becoming a scholarship holder of the Foundation of the First President of Kazakhstan and bagging awards in international competitions.

While still studying in Kazakhstan, Nazargozhayev dreamt of working abroad, eager to learn from the world's best choreographers. Post-graduation in 2014, he journeyed to Moscow before landing in the German city of Kiel, where he fine-tuned his skills by dancing in professional theaters.

The Royal Danish Theater was always his ultimate goal, a prestigious institution known for its distinctive school and style. Entry to this European powerhouse is highly competitive, with invitations only extended via a closed selection process. Nazargozhayev clinched the coveted spot after a successful audition in Copenhagen, which fell on his birthday, making it an unforgettable celebration.

Making his debut at the Royal Danish Theater in "27'52," a production by celebrated choreographer Jiří Kylián, Nazargozhayev left an indelible impression, performing the lead role. Now, he prepares to bring his art back home, enchanting Almaty audiences with his unique blend of European classical ballet finesse and emotional depth.
