Germans in Dubai Discuss Unease in Lively Discourse - Discussions filled with anxiety among Germans in Dubai
Since the US launched attacks on Iranian targets, a wave of anxiety has swept through the German expat community in the United Arab Emirates. Previously, a WhatsApp group dedicated to shared experiences of starting businesses in Dubai, finding skilled craftsmen, or searching for stylish apartments by the water, has been abuzz with darker topics: military strategies, US base locations, canceled flights - all signs of a war creeping into daily life, even for those who choose to deny it.
Emotions range from concern, calmness, to a desire to push aside any gloomy thoughts and maintain the sunny ex-pat lifestyle in this desert home. Some have fled from the perceived gloom in Germany and would rather not confront the reality of war on their new doorstep.
Disrupted Flights and Uncertainty
The increasing tension between the US and Iran is particularly an issue in discussions about air travel. Many are concerned about the rerouted or canceled flights. "Flights will be stopped from today? Really?", a member asked last week. "Calm down, it's always dramatized in Germany", a third calmed them. "The press" is scaring people. But, unbeknownst to these expats, Munich is actually closer to Kyiv than Dubai is to Chorramabad, one of the places bombed by US forces in Iran.
In reality, some airlines temporarily halted flights to the Arab Emirates over the weekend. British Airways canceled several flights to Dubai, and hundreds of passengers found themselves stranded, spending nine hours aboard their plane, only to land in Zurich instead of Dubai, according to reports by the "Guardian". Singapore Airlines and Air France KLM also canceled flights to Dubai, while Lufthansa chose to continue serving the area, closely monitoring developments and ready to adjust its flight plan if needed.
"Business as Usual"
A few minutes later, the anxious atmosphere was replaced by laughter in the expat chat group, as one member shared a joke about pickpockets in Lucerne, garnering eight likes. A lone poster attempted to address the underlying geopolitical unrest, offering cautious thoughts but prompting controversy. "Trump has set a 14-day pause for now," they said before the US struck Iranian nuclear facilities. "Highly distorted", the same group member countered. Another tried to mediate, running through various scenarios and concluding that while panic was unnecessary, a certain level of preparedness was wise. "Get two more cans. It can't hurt. Maybe even a charcoal tablet if you wish.", they suggested.
Amidst uncertainty, the administrator decided to steer the conversation back to familiar ground: "From here, it's STOP with politics and war. We leave that to other groups. Thanks," they wrote, and the discussion moved back to beachfront apartment deals.
