Coach service provider FlixBus starts offering domestic travel in Romania, linking 50 urban centers

Domestic coach services offered by FlixBus debut in Romania, linking over fifty urban centers.

In a significant move for the Romanian transport market, FlixBus has launched its first domestic routes, connecting over 50 cities across the country. This expansion is an important step towards diversifying mobility options for citizens and supporting the growth of internal and regional tourism.

The new intercity coach routes include major connections such as Bucharest-Iași and Constanța-Timișoara, as well as cities like Satu Mare. FlixBus, active in Romania's international coach market since 2018, now connects more than 80 Romanian cities to over 160 destinations across Europe.

Markus Tober, the managing director of FlixBus Romania, expressed that expanding the network internally is a natural step towards offering a fully integrated mobility solution for Romanian passengers. Adrian Rașoiu, Business Development Director at FlixBus Romania, shared similar sentiments, stating that this move is aimed at providing a seamless travel experience for passengers within the country.

The Romanian transport market is moving towards the European model by liberalizing intercounty transport, aligning with countries like Germany, France, Italy, and Portugal. This shift is supported by Gabriel-Bogdan Sțetco, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship and Tourism, who stated that FlixBus's expansion into the domestic transport market is a positive development for the country.

During the pandemic, passenger numbers for intercity coach travel in Romania grew by over 40%, and intercity coach revenues increased by 14%. This growth trend continues, with coach travel remaining one of the top three preferred means of transport for foreign tourists in Romania, according to Tudorel Andrei, president of the National Institute of Statistics.

In 2024, nearly 37,000 international visitors traveled by coach within Romania, with transport spending increasing by over 15%. This suggests a growing interest in domestic travel, a trend that FlixBus's expansion aims to capitalize on.

The launch of FlixBus's domestic network comes at a key moment for the Romanian transport market, as it transitions towards a more liberalized and integrated model. With FlixBus's extensive experience in the international coach market and its commitment to providing affordable and convenient travel options, passengers can look forward to a more connected and accessible Romania.
