Munich Airport's Terminal 1 Expansion: The Scoop, Timeline, and How It Affects Your Journey

Expansion Boost: Munich Airport Increases by an Additional 360 Metres

Munich Airport's chopper gig? They're extending Terminal 1, baby! This bad boy's costing 'em €665 million and spans a whopping 360 meters, accommodating 12 medium-haul aircraft or 6 hefty long-haul jets. It's Munich's answer to Bavaria's largest infrastructure project - and it's right on schedule.

6 Million Passengers, Whoopty Doo!

The terminal's set to go live in mid-2026, handling around 6 million passengers yearly. That's as many as Hannover Airport deals with! Bavarian Finance Minister Albert Füracker (CSU) even called it "Munich Airport: Hannover Edition".

The Why Behind the Bloody Expansion

The expansion's all because Munich Airport's seen rapid growth, especially in the long-haul sector. Nearly 360 airlines take to the skies from here weekly. The new terminal will provide much-needed breathing room for this growth explosion.

Airport bigwig, Jost Lammers, says, "The demand is there, and we badly need this expansion."

What's Coming to the New Terminal Area

  • Toss those laptops: Modern security tech means Questionable Joe (the airport's scanner) will handle screenings, making the hand-luggage-unpacking blues a thing of the past.
  • Boarding like a Boss: Automats are already installed, getting ready for test runs.
  • A-380 ready: Some passport bridges can handle the Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger plane.
  • Grub and Shop: Restaurants, cafes, shops, and sweet lounging zones will be moving in soon.

Munich Airport: The Rising Star

With over 41 million passengers yearly, Munich Airport is Germany's second-largest airport - and growing. The new terminal expansion will help with catering to a boom in passengers and cement Munich as an international hub.
