Germans Shun U.S.A. as Preferred Travel Spot: Tourism Data Shows German Travelers Dampening Interest in Visiting the United States - Germans Shun U.S.A. as Preferred Travel Choice Among Travelers from Germany, Based on Trivago Data
Germans Steer Clear of the USA as a Travel Destination, Trivago Reports
According to hotel booking platform Trivago, German interest in traveling to the United States has notably decreased. Johannes Thomas, the company's CEO, revealed to Capital that there's been a noticeable drop in travel to the USA, with a "double-digit percentage" decline observed.
The same trend is visible among travelers from other countries as well. Thomas stated that Canadians and Mexicans are also booking fewer trips to the USA. Concurrently, US citizens themselves are opting for domestic vacations.
The decline in the number of German tourists is linked to increasing economic uncertainty, largely attributed to the entry policies since the second term of Donald Trump's presidency. The Federal Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for the United States, emphasizing that border officers have the final say regarding entry, even with a valid visa.
Germans are not the only travelers adopting a cautious approach. Trivago, which compares hotel offers from numerous booking sites, has reported a contradictory trend. According to Thomas, global travel demand remains strong. In the first quarter of 2025, Trivago's revenue jumped by 22 percent compared to the previous year, and the company anticipates double-digit revenue growth for the entire year.
Following a challenging period marked by the pandemic and a fall in company value, Trivago appears to be making a comeback since 2024, after a change in leadership. Thomas expressed optimism, stating that the company has surpassed expectations and is witnessing healthy demand.
