Germans Unanimous: Digital Tech Key to Fighting Climate Change
German citizens and industry leaders are united in their belief that digital technologies and innovation are key to combating climate change. A significant majority of Germans view climate change as the most pressing issue, with digital companies expected to play a pioneering role.
A staggering 53% of Germans consider climate change the greatest and most urgent human problem. Only 9% see it as just one of many issues, and a mere 8% dismiss it as exaggerated or non-existent. This widespread concern is reflected in the public's expectations for digital companies. 56% demand that these companies lead the fight against climate change, while 67% of young people aged 16 to 29 hope that technical innovations will solve the problem within the next decade.
Bitkom President Achim Berg echoes these sentiments, stating that the new federal government must prioritize resource and energy efficiency through digitization. Bitkom proposes a funding program for sustainable technologies to support this effort. Meanwhile, 61% of Germans believe that digital companies should use their influence to promote climate protection, with 52% agreeing that the fight against climate change cannot be won without digitization.
In line with these expectations, large chemical companies like BASF are planning to use small modular reactors (SMRs), hydrogen infrastructure, and large-scale CO₂-to-value plants to significantly reduce emissions. Startups like the Finnish company NG Nordic are developing plastics made entirely from CO₂, aiming for market introduction in the coming years.
The German public's overwhelming concern about climate change is driving expectations for digital companies to lead the way in innovative solutions. With the majority believing that technical innovations will solve the problem within the next decade, the stage is set for the new federal government and industry leaders to collaborate on sustainable technologies.
