Brocken Peak: A New Era for Tourism in Harz, Germany, at a Price Tag of 3.5 Million Euros
District of Harz acquires Brocken Peak for a sum of 3.5 million Euros - Harz district purchases Brocken-Cuppe for an estimated 3.5 million Euros.
Get your hiking boots ready, folks! The County of Harz is rolling out the red carpet for an all-new tourism experience at the iconic Brocken summit. After sealing the deal for 3.5 million euros, the County Administrator, Thomas Balcerowski, has big plans to revamp and revitalize the historic site.
This monumental purchase includes two sprawling plots of land totaling 12,937 square meters, complete with numerous renowned structures like the Brocken Tower, Tourist Hall, and Weather House. The previous proprietors? None other than the Brocken Administration and Marketing GmbH & Co. KG, a consortium. The official transfer of ownership is set for July 1, 2025.
Balcerowski has been effusive about the coming changes, describing the acquisition as nothing short of historic. "June 12, 2025, will be etched in history, no less significant than the first television tower built in Germany on the Brocken in 1936 or the opening of the Brocken on December 3, 1989," remarked the administrator.
The goal here? To breathe new life into the tourism offerings and improve the quality on the Brocken plateau with strategic investments in infrastructure. The strategy aims to entice new audiences and maintain the loyalty of established visitors alike.
To make this happen, the County of Harz has their sights set on a new multi-purpose hall, capable of hosting theater performances, conferences, or countless other events. Additionally, a three-story building, previously leased by Deutsche Telekom AG, is slated for partial conversion to better accommodate tourists.
The multi-purpose hall will be christened Heine Hall, offering a flexible space to accommodate about 500 people in theater configuration or approximately 250 guests for conferences and banquets. In order to make the Heine Hall fully accessible to all visitors, a new reception building will be constructed. This structure will serve as the welcoming gateway to the Heine Hall and will connect seamlessly with the neighboring Goethe Hall and Tourist Hall.
The influx of visitors undoubtedly brings excitement and opportunities for the Brocken Railway—a narrow-gauge railway that has been operating since 1899 and serves as the only means to reach the summit by land. Balcerowski envisions this enhanced Brocken as an increased draw for tourists, who will flock to the railway for an unforgettable journey to the summit's serene heights. Boosting visitor numbers to the Brocken Railway may also help secure the approximately 250 jobs at the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen GmbH.
So, what is the Brocken, you ask? This 1,141-meter peak is the tallest in Northern Germany and has long been shrouded in myths and legends. It's also hallowed ground in the annals of German reunification. Intriguingly, the Harz region, which encompasses the Brocken summit, already boasts a wealth of tourist attractions, drawing visitors with hikes to the summit, rides along the historic Brocken Railway, and all the captivating charm the Harz Mountains have to offer[1][3][4].
