In a recent survey conducted by JobAboard.de between October 2024 and January 2025, the topic of working abroad was explored with 2,214 participants. The results reveal interesting trends and preferences among those considering a move.

The USA leads the ranking of non-European countries for working abroad, with 24.7% of respondents choosing it. Australia and Canada are tied for second place, each with 21.6% of the vote. Switzerland and Greece follow closely with 15.6% and 15.0% respectively, while New Zealand secures third place among non-European countries, with 17.4% of respondents choosing it.

The survey findings suggest that the main motivation for working abroad is experiencing new cultures and languages. Younger people (18-29) are particularly drawn to this, with the desire for variety growing among those aged 40-49. Italy and Portugal follow closely, with 17.5% and 17.4% respectively.

Interestingly, boosting career is a nice bonus but not the main reason for most. The topic of 'good salary' interests younger people, especially men, the most, but remains behind other motivations. The UK has declined in popularity for working abroad, falling from second place in the 2022/23 survey to seventh.

Scandinavian countries such as Norway, Sweden, and the UK are also attractive destinations for many. France and Ireland are less popular for working abroad, possibly due to high cost of living or language barriers.

Globalization in the workplace is another topic covered on the JobAboard.de website, discussing why more and more companies are hiring foreign employees. The website also features articles on remote work abroad, including where it's worth working and the hotspots for digital nomads in 2025.

A video tip is available on the website, featuring international expert Lea Fiebelkorn discussing what you need to know about working remotely abroad. The video covers the difference between remote work and working from home, and what's important regarding tax law.

Leaving Germany is a new motivation that ranks third in the survey. Another motivation is seeking more variety and a change of scenery. Popular countries outside Europe for working abroad among Germans include the USA, China, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Indonesia, and Canada. The UAE is noted for its ease of living without speaking the local language, despite some concerns about job security and pay. In JobAboard.de rankings and expat surveys, the UAE and China are frequently cited among top destinations, while the USA and Canada also rank highly due to strong job markets and historical connections.
