Breaking Records! Italy's Museums Have More Visitors Than Inhabitants for the First Time

Italy experiences a significance in museum attendance, surpassing the population for the first time.

It's no joke, amigo! Italy's major tourist attractions brought in a whopping 60 million paying visitors last year, trouncing the country's population for the very first time. The iconic Colosseum in Rome claimed the title with a staggering 14.7 million visitors, followed closely by the Uffizi Gallery in Florence (5.3 M) and ancient city of Pompeii (4.3 M), once a victim of the catastrophic Vesuvius eruption. Both local and international tourists contributed a massive €382 million to the Italian coffers.

Skippin' back to last year, the total number of visitors increased by a cool 2 million, while total earnings rose by a hefty 68 million euros, largely due to the jump in entrance fees. The Colosseum alone brought in a cool €100 million for the state! Most other attractions experienced an increase as well. As of now, Italy is home to around 59 million inhabitants.

Even though they aren't on the list, some of Rome's most significant museums are worth a mention. The Vatican Museums, which house the Sistine Chapel where our freshly minted Pope Leo XIV was elected, attract over six million visitors annually – enough to place them second on the list.

In total, Italy boasts an impressive 400 state museums. After the Colosseum, the Pantheon (4.1 M) in Rome, the Galleria dell'Accademia (2.2 M) in Florence, Castel Sant'Angelo (1.3 M), and the Egyptian Museum (1 M) in Turin are among the most visited sites.
