Moosomin Shines at National Communities in Bloom Competition

The picturesque town of Moosomin, Canada, is once again making headlines as it competes in the national round of the Communities in Bloom competition. This is the second time Moosomin has made it to the national level, having achieved this in 2004.

Preparations for the challenge have kept the town's residents busy for a week, bringing the community together in a spirit of friendly competition. Local competitions are held, with residents participating in activities such as growing tomato plants with the most tomatoes or having the most unusual planters.

The Communities in Bloom competition is a national contest that evaluates communities based on urban forestry, heritage conservation, environmental efforts, volunteerism, and beautification projects. It aims to foster community pride and spirit through these collective actions, going beyond just floral displays to include broader community growth and environmental stewardship.

The City of Moosomin recently welcomed Communities in Bloom judges for their entry at the national challenge. The judges' schedule was packed, with early morning starts and late evening finishes, allowing only five minutes to explore each location. The judges evaluated Moosomin based on six categories: community appearance, tree management, heritage conservation, landscape, environmental action, and plant and floral displays.

Moosomin's Main Street was adorned with colorful flowers in planters in front of local businesses, reflecting the community's commitment to beautifying public spaces. The Moosomin & District Regional Park has invested significant effort to enhance and refresh these spaces in preparation for judging, demonstrating the competition’s role in encouraging ongoing community improvement and beautification.

Ann Norgan, a local CIB committee member, recalled that the committee was initially composed of herself and two friends, who competed for three years at the provincial level. The revitalized interest in Communities in Bloom led Ann to rejoin the initiative.

The judges have been impressed with Moosomin, stating that the community takes a lot of pride in its appearance. Becoming a judge for Communities in Bloom is open to anyone, and the judges' next stop will be Capreol in Ontario.

Moosomin's success in the competition highlights its vibrant landscapes and strong community involvement. The competition provides benefits such as an independent assessment through judges' detailed reports, which help communities like Moosomin seek funding for further initiatives.

Established in 1995, Communities in Bloom draws inspiration from similar initiatives in Ireland and France. It is now a non-profit organization in partnership with the Canadian National Landscape Association. Moosomin's entry into the national competition is a testament to the town's commitment to sustainable community development, environmental responsibility, and celebrating local heritage, which together boost the town’s overall quality of life and pride.
