Volvo's Luxurious Giant: A Peek into the Volvo EM90
Monolithic Volvo EM90: Marvel of Engineering with Comfortable Cabin Interior
When we envision spacious Volvo vehicles, the quaint station wagons of yesteryear come to mind. But times have changed, and in China, the Swedes are stepping into uncharted territory by building their first van, the EM90. If it ever graces our roads, it's bound to gain a loyal following - though parking it might be a struggle.
Upon entering the Volvo EM90, one could be forgiven for thinking they've stepped into a chic apartment, not a car. At 5.21 meters long, it delivers an extraordinary amount of space, offering a plush, upscale environment with more comfort than your living room, ambiance like a high-end furniture store, and more electronics than Media Markt.
The Swedish automaker teamed up with their Chinese parent company Geely and based the EM90 on Zeekr's 009. It boasts an impressive 738 kilometers of range using a 116 kWh battery. 360 kW of charging power enables it to charge from 10 to 80% in just 28 minutes.
While the power output of 272 PS might seem modest for a 2.8-ton vehicle, the almost explosive torque generated by electric motors more than compensates. The result is a leisurely driving experience tailored for relaxation, with the air suspension feeling like clouds beneath you and the gentle steering maneuvering the heavy giant with ease.
Volvo might have Chinese roots for the EM90, but its soul is undeniably Swedish, with light colors, understated design, and a noble, cozy feel-at-home atmosphere. A step inside the sliding door makes you feel as if you've walked into the upscale corner of a Swedish furniture store - no assembly required!
The front row seats recline, whilst the luxury ones are reserved for the second row. The rear row, however, provides a relatively comfy bench that's still roomier than most Volvos' second rows. And fear not about tidy packing- the EM90 has 535 liters of cargo space, expandable to 2376 liters when everything is folded or compressed.
The most expensive model in the fleet hovers around the €100,000 mark in China, and though there are no plans as of yet to bring it to Europe, luxury limousines for lounging and standing might just catch on here. Scroll down for a glimpse of the EM90's technical specifications.
