Neuss on Weiberfastnacht lights up in a playful rebellion, echoing the Rhineland carnival customs dating back centuries! This female-led uprising sees Novesia Heike II leading a rowdy crew of the Prince's Guard, storming the town hall office to swipe the key to the city and place the mayor's hands in handcuffs.
This mischievous movement is engrained in Neuss's history—a day when women, historically from local government or guilds, embody their power. Originated in the early 19th century, this tradition marks the start of carnival celebrations, symbolically flipping social roles during this revelry-filled period.
As Weiberfastnacht ushers in the lively parades and costume parties, expect to see colorful outfits on the streets, the temporary seizing of power by the women, and the playful act of cutting men's ties. The day promises jubilant gatherings, tunes filling the air, and dancing the night away.
The chaos doesn't end there—festivities continue until Ash Wednesday, with larger parades and celebrations ensuing. Despite the rain, the spirit of Neuss, famous for its motto, "Neuss is colorful, Fastelovend goes around," remains undeterred. Join the fun as the rhymes ring out, "On Ash Wednesday, everything is over, the oaths of loyalty break in two, I no longer want anything to do with all your kisses, as beautiful as it may be, it's all over."
The festivities kick off on Rosenmontag, February 11, on the market square, starting with a lively festival before the parade. The Kappessumzug, a beloved tradition, comes to life from 13:11 onwards through Neuss city center.
Streets close to prepare for the parade, affecting the bus routes, and the Benno-Nußbaum-Platz will be closed from early morning hours until everything's spick-and-span post-parade. The parade route leads through the city center, culminating at the Stadthalle parking lot exit.
