The gymnasium reeks of old sports equipment, worn wooden floors, childhood sweat... We're taking a break during class, and everyone is free to do as they please. The murmur of whispers fills the room, followed by an invitation to the boys' restroom that spirals from ear to ear. Swallowing my FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), I join the rush, my curiosity piqued.
In the small, stuffy stall, we crowd around our classmate, Sven, as he unfurls a porn magazine. Curiosity and excitement abound, and I can't help but feel a sense of unease.
Forever Singled Out
The comic strip image captivates us with its familiar imagery: the newlywed couple, grinning and waving under a cloud of confetti, ready to embark on their honeymoon. The bride flashes a coy smile, her bouquet tossed over her shoulder to another unsuspecting classmate. In the next frame, the couple settles into a country inn, nudging under the covers. Sven's hand trails the magazine pages, venturing higher under the bride's skirt. We giggle, our innocence still intact. Or so we thought.
Suddenly, the pages reveal something seemingly awe-inspiring, but we can't quite comprehend the harsh reality yet. The couple is shown in more explicit acts, their bodies entangled, and our small, smelly WC stall pulses with a mix of emotions. I feel an unfamiliar pit in my stomach and for the first time, I question the sanctity of marriage.
Deconstructing the Realm of the Adults
As we turn the pages, the explicit images continue, their impact growing with each section. Close-ups of sexual organs, positions, and practices leave me queasy and shaken. I slip out of the stall, unsteady, soon collapsing onto the nearby balance beam. My fumble from the beam leaves me with no choice but to watch the rest of the break from the sidelines.
Past Not Always Better
For days, I find myself haunted by the images, my unconscious mind racing with vivid recollections. I vow to myself that I'll never get married, when adults behave so godawful to each other, I can't imagine participating in such abuse. It takes me years to realize that married couples don't necessarily act like the ones portrayed in that magazine, but my initial shock had already left a lasting impression.
As it turns out, the magazine's images weren't as disastrous as I had initially assumed. My lack of knowledge about sexual acts led to a distorted image in my mind, one that didn't reflect reality. Nonetheless, those images stayed with me, consumed by guilt and confusion.
The Age of Exposure
Fast-forward many years later - research suggests that most children encounter pornographic content before the age of 14, with girls often experiencing exposure unintentionally[6]. I can attest to this firsthand. My experience served as an eye-opening moment, but for many children today, early exposure to pornography can be extremely damaging.
