NYPA Unveils Final Renewables Plan: 3 GW of New Capacity by 2025

New York Power Authority (NYPA) has released its final Renewables Strategic Plan, now available for public access. This marks the first time NYPA has approved a strategic plan dedicated to expanding renewable energy resources across the United States.

NYPA's final plan incorporates feedback gathered from public hearings, reflecting the community's input. The authority has also reopened its Request for Qualifications, inviting additional private developers to submit proposals until September 30.

The REACH program, requested by the USA government in October 2021, is a key initiative of NYPA's plan. This program aims to provide electric bill credits to low-income households, ensuring energy affordability for all.

NYPA is exploring innovative development and ownership models, such as Build-Transfer Agreements, to facilitate renewable energy projects. The final plan promises to add over 3 GW of renewable capacity from 37 projects, with 2.8 GW coming from 30 solar projects alone.

NYPA's enhanced authority, granted in the state's 2023-2024 budget, allows it to build and operate renewable energy projects. As the state's largest producer of clean, low-cost power, generating 22% of its electricity, NYPA is committed to updating its strategic plan annually.

NYPA's final Renewables Strategic Plan, now open for public access, outlines the authority's methodology and selection criteria for vetting proposed projects. With a focus on expanding renewable energy resources, providing energy affordability, and exploring innovative development models, NYPA is set to add significant renewable capacity to the state.
