Gpped in Ghostly Grip? Unraveling the American Fear Landscape

Got goosebumps creeping up your spine? You're not alone, pal!

This year, the 7th wave of the Chapman University Survey of American Fears quizzed over a thousandadult U.S. folks on their biggest jurks. The results might surprise ya – even in 2021, some fears are pretty predictable, while others – well, they're a wild mix.

Topping the list is what you'd expect for this year, but scrolling down unearths a bizarre medley of fears ranging from murky lakes to public speaking, sharks, and murder hornets.

Let's dive in! With 9.3% of the scare-mongers, it seems ghosts took a chilling spot on the list. These numbers reflect those who ranked themselves as "Scared" or "Terrified" of the spooky spectrum.

Other spine-tinglers? 24.7% are creeped out by reptiles; another 9.3% don't fancy the thought of a zombie apocalypse. Oddly enough, 5.6% don't trust clowns, and an astounding 15.9% fear technology they can't fathom.

Did that spark your curiosity? Let's flesh out our fear connections. Another survey, this time by OnePoll for Phantom Wines, asked nearly 2,000 people about their beliefs in the paranormal. Out of the spooky bunch, 63% toe the line between reality and the unknown. In fact, a staggering 57% believe in ghosts, while 49% think they've felt a ghostly presence! Other weird believers? 39% reckon aliens might visit, and none other than 27% believe Bigfoot's lurking in the shadows.

But wait! How about something a little zanier, like time travel? Curiosity kicked in, and voila – CBS News ran a poll asking if folks think humans can sock it to the time stream. A whopping 39% say, "You bet!", while 56% scoff, "Nope!" If given the chance for a safe(ish) spin, half of the respondents wish to explore the future, while 40% are headed towards the past.

So, according to these studies, ghosts seem to linger in the air, but time travel? Not so much – seems most people aren't on board with buckling up for a cosmic adventure!

In the realm of unusual beliefs, 57% of people surveyed believe in the existence of ghosts, while 40% wish to travel to the past if given the opportunity, indicating a significant interest in the fashion and beauty of different time periods and possible exploration of food and drink from different eras as well. A survey on paranormal beliefs also revealed that 39% of people believe in the possibility of alien encounters, which might signify a fascination with travel to far-off planets, thus expanding their lifestyle horizons.
