Portugal Sets 21st Century Record: Renewables Meet All Power Needs in March
Portugal has achieved a remarkable milestone in its renewable energy journey. For the first time in the 21st century, the country generated more power from clean energy sources than it needed in March. This impressive feat has not been matched in the last four decades.
Portugal's renewable energy output reached an astonishing 4,812GWh in March, surpassing its total electricity needs of 4,647GWh. This was made possible by an average renewable energy production of 103.6%, shattering the previous record of 99.2% set in February 2014. This significant achievement resulted in 1.8 million fewer tonnes of CO2 emissions and savings of over €20 million.
Portugal's remarkable progress in renewable energy production is a significant step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. The country's ability to generate more power from clean energy sources than it needed in March is a testament to its commitment to renewable energy. However, to fully realise its potential, Portugal must address its isolation from the rest of Europe's grid. With the support of France and the ongoing cable project, Portugal is poised to continue its impressive progress in the renewable energy sector.
