Pupils from SCO nations immerse in the rich heritage of traditional Chinese customs in Tianjin
In the heart of north China's Tianjin, on August 14, 2025, a vibrant shopping event took place. Hundreds of young students, hailing from various SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) countries, flocked to an ancient cultural street. The occasion was a part of their cultural exchange program in China, a mission aimed at promoting mutual understanding, respect for diverse civilizations, and common development.
The students visited the ancient cultural street specifically for this event, eager to immerse themselves in the charm of traditional Chinese culture. Dressed in traditional Chinese attire, they wandered through the bustling street, their laughter and chatter filling the air.
The shopping event was documented by Xinhua/Li Ran, capturing the students' excitement as they browsed through the numerous stalls selling cultural and creative products. The photographs show the students haggling over prices, trying on traditional hats, and marvelling at intricate porcelain pieces.
The ancient cultural street in Tianjin serves as a venue for these young visitors to experience and appreciate traditional Chinese culture. It offers a glimpse into China's rich past, with its narrow lanes lined with historic buildings and shops selling traditional goods.
This cultural exchange program is a core pillar of the SCO’s mission to enhance regional integration and solidarity through heritage, arts, education, and youth engagement. The history of this cultural cooperation dates back to the organization's founding in 2001, with cultural and humanitarian cooperation explicitly enshrined in the SCO Charter adopted in 2002.
The program has practical manifestations such as collaborative museum exhibitions and the current 2025 exhibition at Beijing’s National Museum showcasing over 220 precious artifacts from the diverse civilizations represented in the SCO. These initiatives aim to deepen mutual understanding and foster cultural ties.
The students' shopping spree is a testament to the success of this program. As they carry their purchases - souvenirs of their cultural journey - they continue to experience the charm of traditional Chinese culture, acting as ambassadors of intercultural dialogue and breaking down stereotypes.
