While much of Italy braces for a wet Spring, beachgoers everywhere are counting down the days till they can rock their costumi and ciabatte and get their toes wet in the ocean.
But before you rush to pack your bucket and spade, you'll want to know a few things about the rules governing beach season start and end dates. As the majority of Italy's coastline is managed by private operators, these businesses are subject to regulations regarding their operating hours.
Each region (and sometimes municipalities) decides on their own when their beach season kicks off and wraps up, taking local weather, beach conditions, and staff availability into account.
To try and set some standards for 2025 beach seasons, the government declared a nationwide bathing season to stretch from May 17th to September 21st, though local authorities can extend this period as necessary.
During the summer months, private beaches must provide safety flags and have lifeguards on duty. Additionally, local or regional authorities have to perform water quality tests at each location to ensure it's safe for swimmers.
Here's the lowdown on when private Italian beaches are set to open and close this year.
