These extreme heatwaves are primarily caused by intensified "heat domes" - high-pressure systems that trap heat over regions for extended periods.

Since the Industrial Revolution, CO2 levels have skyrocketed from around 280 parts per million to over 420 ppm as of 2024, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This surge in greenhouse gases is a significant contributor to global warming, leading to the intensification of extreme weather events like the current heatwaves.
