Spellbound weekend under enigmatic Snæfellsjökull glacier: a mystical adventure unfolds

Embrace the stunning beauty of Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a nature lover's paradise filled with charming villages and breathtaking landscapes. A day trip from Reykjavik is all it takes to experience its wonders, even during winter. However, be mindful of the icy roads and ensure your vehicle is equipped with proper winter tires.

Fosshótel Hellnar: The Perfect Seaside Retreat

Our destination was Fosshótel Hellnar, a captivating rural hotel nestled along the cliffs of the wild coast. The hotel, which once served as a yoga/wellness retreat, was transformed by the Fosshótel chain and is open year-round, save for the darkest winter months.

Located in the picturesque fishing village of Hellnar, Fosshótel Hellnar boasts a sophisticated and cozy Scandinavian-style decor. The lobby offers panoramic windows, a roaring fireplace, and warm hues of soft blues and browns. The guest rooms are equipped with traditional lace bedspreads, TVs, coffee/tea facilities, free WiFi, and more.

Hellnar and Arnarstapi: A Coastal Trek

Begin the day with a leisurely hike along the coast from the hotel towards the quaint fishing village of Arnarstapi. Although a short drive from Hellnar, the hike offers breathtaking views and takes just over an hour each way.

Arnarstapi is a small village that once held significant importance as a trading post. The pier, as well as the coastline surrounding the village, is virtually adorned with striking columnar basalt rock formations. Take a stroll along the shoreline and admire the stunning scenery.

Dinner, Cats, and More

Hike back to Hellnar under the twilight sky and conclude your evening with a delightful three-course meal at the hotel restaurant. Fosshotel Hellnar offers a unique dining experience with captivating views of the ocean, where Orcas can often be spotted swimming.

One of the highlights of our trip was having the opportunity to meet Iceland's most famous cat, Tabby cat Pál Dáníelsdóttir, who serves as the hotel's Mousekeeper. Don't forget to check out the hotel's lava cave tours, black-sand beaches, and other local attractions!
