Over the upcoming weekend, residents and travellers in Baden-Württemberg are advised to prepare for increased traffic on major highways due to the start and continuation of summer holidays. The Ministry of the Interior in Baden-Württemberg has identified certain routes as particularly prone to congestion, with high traffic volumes expected on the A5, A8, and A81 highways.

The A5 highway, between Heidelberg interchange and Baden-Baden, is one of the routes where congestion is expected. Similarly, the A8 highway, particularly around Mundelsheim, between the Leonberg triangle and Stuttgart interchange, and between Stuttgart interchange and Herrenberg, is expected to be congested. The A81 highway, specifically around Mundelsheim, between the Stuttgart interchange and Lake Constance/Switzerland border, and the A6 highway between Walldorf interchange and Bretzfeld, are also likely to experience heavy traffic.

The B31 highway, including the sections around Lindau, Friedrichshafen, and Stockach, is another highway prone to congestion in the southwest of Baden-Württemberg. The A7 highway between Aalen/Oberkochen and Ulm/Elchingen interchange is another highway where congestion is likely to occur.

The increased traffic is not limited to Baden-Württemberg alone, but is a result of the start and continuation of summer holidays in fourteen federal states. This means that connecting corridors, such as the A5, A8, and A81, may experience increased traffic due to holiday travellers from neighbouring states like Bavaria or Hesse.

It is important to note that the congestion is not due to any specific roadworks or incidents currently reported. The expected traffic congestion on highways of Baden-Württemberg over the upcoming weekend is primarily due to regional vacation schedules and typical holiday traffic patterns.

The Ministry of the Interior in Baden-Württemberg has warned travellers to plan for more time due to the expected congestion. Summer holidays in Baden-Württemberg are not starting immediately, but later this month, and the congestion is expected to occur from Friday to Sunday.

[2] In 2025, Germany uses staggered summer holiday schedules across federal states to mitigate nationwide simultaneous traffic peaks.

[3] Relevant highways where congestion traditionally occurs in Baden-Württemberg during summer weekends include the A5 (north-south direction), A8 (east-west towards Munich/Stuttgart), and A81 (south towards Lake Constance/Switzerland). These highways connect the region to vacation destinations and often see heavy traffic during summer holidays.

  1. Despite the travel advisory for increased traffic on highways A5, A8, and A81 in Baden-Württemberg due to summer holidays, one might find an attractive lifestyle in Pforzheim, a city nestled at the foot of the Black Forest along the A6 highway, providing a calm contrast to the busy weekend travel.
  2. After the weekend travel, if visiting the region of Pforzheim, one could explore its historical sites and indulge in local culture, offering a unique travel experience that complements the traditional congestion on highways A5, A8, and A81 during summer weekends in Baden-Württemberg.
