The Oldest Church in Kempen Land Hails from the Chapel of St. Peter
In the picturesque Kempen region, history and faith come together in an exciting event. On Sunday, September 21, an ecumenical bike tour will take place, bringing together Christians of both denominations for a unique journey.
The tour begins at 2 PM from the Catholic Church in Anrath, with participants departing for St. Peter's Chapel, the oldest church in the Kempen region. This historic chapel, believed to have been initiated by Charlemagne, holds a significant place in the region's past.
Before 1010, Anrath and Vorst Christians had to travel to St. Peter's Chapel in today's Kempen for mass, as Anrath only had a small wooden church. Around 1010, St. Peter's Chapel was separated from the Anrath parish. Today, star-shaped paths like the "Gelles-Kirchweg" from Gelleshof in Kehn towards St. Peter, "Am Anrather Weg" in St. Peter, and the "St.-Peter-Allee" in Kempen remind us of this history.
The event is organised by the Protestant Church Anrath-Vorst and the Catholic parishes St. Johannes Anrath and St. Godehard Vorst. The group will gather under the linden trees in front of the chapel for a picnic (please bring your own food and drinks). After the short service at the chapel, the return journey to Vorst or Anrath will be at a leisurely pace.
For more information, contact Pastor Martin Gohlke at 02156 40845 or by email at [email protected]. It is important to note that each participant is responsible for themselves.
Vorst participants will be picked up at the Rewe parking lot (package station), Kempener Straße, around 2:25 PM. The organisers look forward to welcoming you on this spiritual journey through time and faith.
