Malta Offers Financial Incentives to Boost Tourism
In a bid to stimulate tourism following the Covid-19 pandemic, Malta has announced an incentive scheme for visitors booking stays at select three-to five-star hotels. The scheme, unveiled by Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo on April 9th, 2021, aims to make Malta's hotels competitive as international tourism restarts.
Under the scheme, tourists booking a five-star hotel will receive 100 euros from the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), matched by the hotel for a total of 200 euros. Those opting for a four-star hotel will receive a total of 150 euros, and those booking a three-star hotel will receive 100 euros.
The MTA will assist participating hotels in implementing this offer. The scheme, estimated to positively impact the attraction of more than 35,000 tourists, has a total budget of €3,500,000.
Visitors who book summer holidays directly through local hotels will receive the handout from the MTA. The offer is only valid for bookings made directly through local hotels.
The offer for visitors to Gozo's hotel properties includes an additional 10% value on the incentives for five-, four-, and three-star hotels. The application for the additional incentive in Gozo can be submitted online.
The final number of tourists attracted will be determined based on the mix between five-, four-, and three-star clients. This initiative is part of Malta's broader efforts to stimulate tourism after the Covid-19 pandemic.
As of April 26th, 2021, most Covid-19 restrictions in Malta are expected to be lifted, including visits to elderly homes. Childcare, kindergartens, and primary schools have reopened, and up to four people can gather in public.
Reuters reports that this incentive scheme is part of Malta's ongoing efforts to stimulate tourism after the pandemic, with the aim of making Malta a premier Mediterranean destination for incentive travel and group experiences.
