Understanding the U.S. Real ID and Acquiring One Before the Approaching Deadline
Getting Your REAL ID, Here's How:
It's crunch time, folks! If you're still schlepping around the old, non-compliant ID, you've gotta get your hands on a REAL ID before May 7th, or you'll be grounded for domestic flights. Here's the lowdown on what a REAL ID is, why you need one, and how to get one.
What Exactly is a REAL ID?
It's a license or ID card that's in line with the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) security standards. Besides using it for flying domestically, you'll also need one to enter certain federal buildings and facilities.
Why All the Fuss, You Ask?
The REAL ID Act, signed into law back in 2005, aims to improve the reliability and accuracy of state-issued IDs following a recommendation from the 9/11 Commission. The notion is to make it harder for terrorists to evade detection by using bogus IDs.
Already Got One? Check Again!
If you've renewed your ID in the past few years, there's a good chance it's already REAL ID-compliant. Hop over to the DMV and check if your card sports a star in the top corner—that's your signal it's ready for action!
Don't Have a REAL ID? No Sweat!
To get your hands on one, you'll need to visit your state's driver's licensing agency website to learn the specifics, like whether you'll need to make an appointment at the DMV. You'll also need to gather these documents:
- Proof of Identity: U.S. passport, birth certificate, certificate of naturalization, SSN document, etc.
- Proof of Social Security Number
- Proof of Residency: Utility bills, bank statements, lease agreements, etc.
- Non-Citizens: Government-issued documents showing lawful presence and your full name.
- Name Change (if applicable): Legal documents like marriage certificates or divorce decrees.
Then, head to your local DMV, where you'll submit your documents, get your mugshot taken, and receive your snazzy new REAL ID.
Deadline Looming: May 7th
If you don't snag your REAL ID by May 7th and you want to hop on a domestic flight, anticipate bringing your passport or another TSA-approved form of ID. Failure to do so may result in delays, additional screenings, and the grim possibility of being denied access to the security checkpoint.
Some state senators have requested another delay, but as of late April, the DHS reported that 81% of travelers at TSA checkpoints were already presenting acceptable identification, so it looks like the deadline will remain in place.
Stay ahead of the game, and make sure your ID is REAL ID-compliant come May 7th! You don't wanna get left at the gate when everyone else is in the air. Can I get a "Yass, REAL ID"?!
Without a Real ID, your personal-finance might take a hit due to unexpected travel costs associating with lacking a valid ID for domestic flights. If you're planning a vacation or lifestyle change involving travel, make sure your REAL ID is up-to-date to avoid any financial burdens.
