Unique spectacle persisting in Karlsruhe until September
In the heart of Germany, the city of Karlsruhe is set to become a vibrant canvas of light, sound, and digital surprises as it hosts the art action titled "Media Art is Here" from August 14 to September 14, 2025. This unique event is a testament to Karlsruhe's status as a UNESCO City of Media Arts, showcasing contemporary media art integrated with technology and interdisciplinary designs.
The art action brings contemporary media art directly into the public space, inviting visitors to pause, discover, and question. The works on display are not only experimental but also everyday, political, and entertaining.
One of the key highlights is Dennis Siering's sound installation, "Radical Climate Action Bird," which features algorithmically generated antifascist songs. Another noteworthy piece is Julijonas Urbonas's "Lawn Centrifuge," which confuses the senses by making gravity a player and offering new perspectives on body and space.
The art action is a prelude to the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival, a four-week celebration that will transform Karlsruhe's city center and the baroque palace façade into a large-scale digital art installation themed "The Shining Lights of Science."
The Karlsruhe artist collective VOLNA's media artwork at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe is another highlight, transforming the entrance into a portal to a virtual world throughout the 2024/2025 season. Judith Milz's performance at Kunstverein Karlsruhe, which merges fictitious and real spaces to create new artistic references, is another event not to be missed.
Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) will present "THE NEST," a life-size nest-like pavilion made from regional, bio-based materials, reflecting ecological value chains and sustainable design, as part of the 26th Karlsruhe Museum Night (KAMUNA 2025) on August 2.
The art action is free to the public and offers a lively alternative to the classic museum visit with free bike tours available on three dates: August 28, September 4, and September 11. Registration and more information for the bike tours can be found at www.cityofmediaarts.de.
Each artwork in the exhibition can be recognised by a large yellow arrow, making it easy for visitors to navigate and explore the city's transformation into a colorful experience of light, sound, and digital surprises. This art action is a unique highlight in the cultural calendar of Karlsruhe, promising an unforgettable journey into the world of media art.
